The course covers central concepts in physical oceanography and fundamental dynamical phenomena exhibited by ocean circulation. The wind-driven and the thermohaline ocean circulations are explained on the basis of theory and illustrated with observations. The course focuses on large-scale ocean circulation but coastal circulation, oceanic wave phenomena and small-scale processes are also included.

Admittance requirements

Knowledge corresponding to Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, 30 hp (MO4000), or Meteorology I, 15 HECs (MO8001) and Meteorology II, 7.5 HEC's (MO8002). Also required is knowledge equivalent to English B/6.
