This fog resides in a very strong syrface inversion; when the temperature increases with heigh. At only a few hundred meters we have been having temperatures like 13-15 C (!), while at the surface it has been close to zero or only sligthly above, as dictated by the melting snow and ice. Once the fog became so dense that the captain decided to stop the ship overnight because, in combination with encountering very difficult ice, we didn't quite know in what direction to go. Of course we know where we want to be but how to get there can sometimes be a very different story! Since then, with five days of fog, we long for some sunshine again, but the research is progressing very nicely and everyone is quite happy about work.
