The UK Earth System modelling project (UKESM): A national collaboration to develop the next generation of UK Earth system models.

The UKESM project brings together the Met Office Hadley Centre and 8 research centres funded by the UK Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC), around a collaboration to develop future UK Earth system modelling capabilities. The 1st model development target (UKESM1) will be used in the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and is now nearing completion. This talk will present the overall aims of the UKESM project, it’s organisational structure and the model configurations and components under development. Initial results will be presented from both the core coupled physical model of UKESM1 (HadGEM3) and a proto-type version of UKESM1, including a full carbon cycle, atmospheric chemistry and an advanced treatment of aerosols. Some early results investigating the sensitivity of simulated Effective Radiative Forcing (ERF) over the historical period to the representation of aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions will be discussed. Future science and model development priorities will also be outlined.
