Title

A topology-based method for tracking of cyclones

Abstract

The aim of my research in atmospheric science is to study the climatology of cyclones. Basic data of cyclone tracks, containing the position in space and time of the cyclone center, is an important key for investigating the surroundings of a cyclone during its life time. To obtain this basic information an algorithm for automatic detection and tracking of cyclones is needed.

In collaboration with data visualisation experts, a topology-based algorithm for tracking of cyclones have been developed. In this method the topological structure of the data field is used together with a threshold value to extract single- or multi-centered cyclonic regions; generally called features. These features are then tracked in time from one time step to the next. The main purpose of developing a new tracking algorithm has been to come up with an efficient method that can be used on very large data sets.

In this seminar I will present an overview of the new tracking algorithm and show some preliminary results. I will also introduce some key concepts commonly used in data visualisation into the atmospheric science community.
