Numerical solution of the shallow water equations on a Yin-Yang grid


The earth and surrounding atmosphere are composed of almost spherical layers. The use of the finite difference schemes in particular the compact schemes to numerical solution of various spherical atmospheric and oceanic equations on traditional lat-lon coordinate has high computational cost. The Yin-Yang grid is potential solution to this problem. Its two components are traditional, orthogonal, lat–lon grids. It is free of singularity and its grid spacing is quasi-uniform. According to the results, the use of Yin-Yang grid greatly reduces the computational cost, but using it reduces accuracy slightly.
