Variability in Polar Mesospheric Clouds Driven by Large-Scale Dynamics

Jeff France's research focuses on large-scale dynamics and associated variability of polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs). This includes the role of the five-day planetary wave in driving variability in the meridional distribution of PMCs and the timing of the PMC season, understanding how the two-day wave couples wintertime planetary waves with summer mesospheric temperatures through enhanced low-latitude instabilities. Other work includes characterizing the global flux of gravity waves into the mesosphere based on observations from the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) mission, and identifying sources and variability of these waves.
