What can we learn about the dynamics of the climate system from long-range forecasts?


Forecasts at lead times of several weeks to months remain challenging, although significant progress has been made in recent years in predicting the state of the climate system on these timescales. In particular, predicting extreme events remains challenging, although accurate forecasts of these events would represent a large benefit to society. At the same time, the relative skill of such forecasts can provide significant insight into the internal dynamics and the coupling between different parts of the climate system. This presentation will explore the current status and future prospects of long-range forecasts in connection with our understanding of the dynamics of the climate system.
