Abstract
"It is well known that velocity fields in non-eddying or eddy-permitting ocean models underestimate the speed and intrinsic variability of ocean flows. While the flow becomes more realistic at eddy-resolving resolution, such simulations are computationally expensive. 

In this talk I will present the causes for the biases in eddy-permitting ocean models and review how we are currently trying to reduce them. Lastly, I will show how biases in the ocean model velocity fields introduce biases in Lagrangian trajectory models, and then attempt to develop a new parameterisation of subgrid-scale turbulence to make trajectories more realistic."
