How representative are our observations?

Observations are routinely used to evaluate (global) aerosol models or derive climatologies. But how representative are these observations really considering the differences in spatial and temporal domains? We have used model simulations to explore these issues and found that spatio-temporal sampling errors are usually much larger than measurement errors and similar (though somewhat smaller) than model errors. Thus representativeness of observations is a real issue in aerosol studies. I will talk about these sampling errors for a variety of observations (remote sensing, in-situ) and discuss how they may be mitigated.
