This beautiful sattelite image shows variability in the marine boundary layer off the coast of California, illustrated by the effects on the cloud field. Note the many eddies and the edges of clouds downstream of major headlands. Also note the differences in the cloud structure; sometimes wavy and sometimes cellular.
